Project: Complete Condo Remodel in Cambridge, MA.
This was our second major project with these clients. We had really enjoyed working with them on a full kitchen remodel in their home, and were thrilled when they asked us to return for a full remodel of their recently purchased 2 bedroom condominium. As shown in the photos below, this unit was in need of a total transformation. Besides the obvious, some of the pain points were having the kitchen feel separated from the rest of the house, and a bedroom located next to a busy street. After coming up with a plan for a new layout, it was time to knock down walls, tear down ceilings, and rip up floors! We moved the kitchen from the back room to the middle of the house, giving them an open concept kitchen and living area. This allowed us more space for larger bedrooms, and a central bathroom.
Some of the behind the scenes work included: installing a new HVAC system, removing asbestos, replacing all wiring, relocating all plumbing, leveling all floors, applying spray foam insulation, adding support beams in the basement, and putting in all new windows. Our clients are happy knowing that they truly have a brand new unit from top to bottom!
They say “a picture is worth a thousand words”, so I don’t think we need to describe what is going on in these before photos!
What a difference! It’s hard to believe that this is the same house, and we love this new kitchen! The white kitchen cabinets with the subway tile backsplash gives the kitchen a clean, open look, and the blue island really pops!
The open shelves in the island are perfect for cookbooks and showing off favorite dishware. The mix of white and red oak in the floor gives a unique pattern in the kitchen and living area.
This view shows where one of the bedrooms used to be. We removed the wall to have an open living area, and now have the second bedroom in the back. The kitchen was originally in the back room behind the door just past the island. The exterior door shown was previously a window, and the original back door was in the old kitchen.
We love the clean lines of the shaker style kitchen cabinets and the quartz countertops.
The stainless steel tempered glass range hood was a bit tricky to install, but it fits perfectly over the island!
The simplicity of the white vanity, with the quartz countertop, along with the subway tile make the bathroom feel bright and spacious. The contrasting tile in the shower niche adds a pop of color, along with space for shampoo and soap.
The mirrored recessed medicine cabinet not only provides more storage, but also helps add more light to the space.
The new bedrooms are in the rear of the house, where it is quiet. By moving walls, the rooms are now more spacious.
You never know what you’ll find behind closed doors! Here we have the convenience of an in-unit laundry closet and a large coat closet.
Some favorite details include this very cool globe-like hanging light, and a sleek kitchen faucet. We transformed this nook into a usable space with drawers and glass shelves filled with light to display their favorite things!
