Beautiful and Functional Galley Kitchen in Wakefield
Project: Kitchen Remodel in Wakefield, MA (AKA #ProjectGloriousGalley)
This beautiful kitchen renovation is a testament that you don’t always have to open up walls to make your kitchen feel bigger! We designed this project for a lovely family who enjoy cooking and being together in the kitchen, yet their previous layout was choppy and did not fully utilize the available space. Without changing the footprint or knocking any walls down, we designed a galley kitchen that maximized functionality with ample room for each work zone, with the sink and cooking area on one side; refrigerator, pantry and workstation on the other.
The homeowners marveled that our team “managed to triple the size and function of our kitchen without removing a wall!” It was such a fun project to design and build, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. Long live the Glorious Galley!
In the galley layout, we didn’t want the space to feel too heavy, so we nixed upper cabinets on the main wall in favor of creamy counter-to-ceiling backsplash tile and moody wall sconces that provide great task lighting and ambience.
The clients chose an induction cooktop and single wall oven, creating a sleek, uninterrupted run of cabinetry.
To balance the backsplash tile across the room, we introduced a lighter “pumice” cabinetry color for the sole wall cabinet, tall pantry and refrigerator surround.
The slate blue base cabinetry is bold yet muted. The homeowners took a bit of a risk selecting a medium-gray quartz countertop – and nearly had buyer’s remorse! – but once it was installed we were smitten, and love the way it adds warmth and depth to the entire space.
The bin pulls on the cabinets and gorgeous bridge-style faucet sparkle in Polished Nickel.
Instead of adding more base cabinet storage, our clients loved the idea of incorporating a small workstation in the main kitchen, creating a simple space for working from home, tackling household tasks, or for their young daughter to complete craft projects.
A nook off the kitchen previously (and awkwardly!) housed the clients’ refrigerator. By pulling the refrigerator into the main kitchen area, we freed up space to create a beautiful coffee bar adjacent to the kitchen.
A tall pantry cabinet with rollout shelves provides ample and easy access to food staples. The homeowners’ daughter adorably claimed the bottom two shelves for all her favorite snacks!
We maximized the functionality of each cabinet by adding accessories that cater to the way the homeowners live and cook, including a pull-out spice rack, charging drawer in the coffee bar area, and a dedicated compost bin next to the kitchen sink.
The energy and harmony of the materials palette is so pleasing in this kitchen, with the warmth of the slate and pumice cabinetry mixing with the cool gray countertop and stainless steel appliances. We layered on additional metal finishes with polished nickel hardware, and brass and black accents on the wall sconces. Perfection!
